Excerpt from Superior Seeds, 1948: Farm and Garden Supplies
Sow in drills about 18 in. Apart and two in. Deep in light, rich soil. Thin to about one inch apart and give frequent and thorough cultivation during the summer.
Next season transplant roots to 4 in. Deep and IS in. Apart in rows four feet apart. The following season the bed may be cut over two or three times. After the final cutting, give a good dressing of manure, or fertilizer.
Home gardeners are advised to snap off the shoots rather than cut them. A top dressing of nitrate of soda about March lst promotes growth and increases yield.
